Profile:
Professor Emeritus and Senior Leading Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Informatics (NII), and Visiting Professor at Monash University Malaysia. He received his B.E. from Nagaoka University of Technology in 1980, M.E. from the same university in 1982, and Dr. Eng. from Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1987. He was appointed Assistant Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1982, Professor in Jan 2000, and Professor Emeritus in Apr 2023. From 1995 to 1996, he was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia.
He has been engaged in research and education in the fields of signal/image processing, image/video coding, media security and forensics, and computer vision. He has supervised 26 Ph.D. graduates, published about 230 peer-reviewed journal papers, 470 international conference papers, 710 domestic conference papers, 13 books, and 2 translated books. He has received 12 paper awards including the IEICE Best Paper Award (2008), Telecommunications Advancement Foundation Award (2011), and ITE Niwa-Takayanagi Paper Award (2012).
He has served as President of IEICE Engineering Sciences Society (ESS) (2011), Editor-in-Chief of IEICE ESS (2012), President of APSIPA (2019-2020), IEEE Signal Processing Society Japan Chapter Chair (2013), IEEE Signal Processing Society Director-at-Large for Region 10 (2016-2017), IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal Committee (2020-2022), and IEEE Fourier Award Committee (2021-2023). He has served on the editorial boards of 8 academic journals including IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, IEEE Trans. on Image Processing, and IEEE Trans. on Information Forensics and Security. He was also the Technical Program Chair for IEEE ICASSP 2012 and General Chair for IEEE ISCAS 2019, among many other organizing committee roles for international conferences. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of IEICE, ITE, and AAIA.
